Community, Parents, & Family

In my classroom, I use culturally conscious teaching practices and teach acceptance of diversity in all aspects. I welcome, appreciate, and value all cultures, ethnicities, races, and families, and teach my students to do the same. Furthermore, I teach my students the importance of community and use the power of local and global communities to teach their significance. I encourage my students to explore and appreciate other cultures, as well as their own, and teach understanding, appreciation, and acceptance.

I use a bi-weekly e-newsletter, and paper copy version, in order to communicate what their students are learning and to keep parents connected to the classroom. Furthermore, I reach out to the parents and guardians of my students using phone calls, e-mails, and Skype and in-person conferences before the school year begins to welcome them to the classroom, discuss the vital role they play in the education of their student, and learn about my students and their backgrounds. I also make an effort to encourage parents to stay connected and encourage various ways parents can become more connected to the classroom. I encourage parents to come into the classroom and share their experience and knowledge of culture, family, and heritage with the class!

I teach about various cultures, ethnicities, races, families, and more by using music, food, and art. I invite guest speakers from the local and global community into the classroom to share their beliefs, experiences, and connections to culture. I use books, film, and group discussions to teach acceptance and appreciation. In my classroom, culture is key and we are open to learning about all cultures, ethnicities, and belief systems.
