Drama in the Classroom & Why Drama?

Drama in the classroom include dramatic productions, such as acting, singing, role playing, dancing, designing in general, designing sets, costumes, or doing makeup. Drama is a great way to allow kids to step outside of themselves into the shoes of someone else. It is a wonderful way to teach empathy, build confidence, and help children under chronic stress to forget about their own challenges. Drama also is a wonderful tool for teaching negative and positive actions, behaviors, consequence, and conflict resolution. 

Drama not only provides everything stated above, theater helps further teach Social and Emotional Skills (SEL,) using drama in the classroom can strengthen student acceptance and the classroom community. Theater promotes strengthening of self-awareness, playful expression, personal mastery, emotional regulation, and cognition.  

It's Easy to Integrate Drama

  • Use drama and theatre to teach Social and Emotional Learning

  • Use drama to teach about cultures and the different customs, traditions, and activities they perform. 

  • Have students act out the plots of literature or historical events. 

  • Take a Brain Break and play some improv games! 

  • Link vocabulary and spelling words to dramatic actions. 

  • Use drama to role play conflict resolution options, model respectful and disrespectful behavior, and to teach empathy to students.
